Yahya name meaning in Islam, origin and popularity in the UK

Yahya is the Arabic name of the Prophet known in English as John the Baptist (peace be upon him). It is often explained as “he lives”, from the root ḥ-y-y, and is linked to the Hebrew Yoḥanan, “God is gracious”. Allah chose the name Himself (19:7). In 2025 Yahya was 81st among boys in England and Wales.

What does Yahya mean?

To an Arabic speaker, Yaḥyā sounds like the verb “he lives”, from the root ḥ-y-y, which also gives ḥayāh (life). Many scholars saw meaning in this: Yahya was born to parents who had given up hope of a child, and he brought life to their house. Historians of language also link the name with the Hebrew Yoḥanan (John), “God is gracious”, since Yahya is the John of the Gospels. Both explanations are given in good sources.

The Qur’an makes the name special: “O Zakariya, We give you good news of a boy whose name will be Yahya. We have not given that name to anyone before” (19:7).

How do you pronounce Yahya?

Say YAH-ya. The “h” is the breathy Arabic ḥ, and the final “a” is long. The Arabic spelling ends in a letter that looks like a “y” but is said as “a”.

The Prophet Yahya (peace be upon him)

Yahya was the son of the Prophet Zakariya, born when his father was very old and his mother had been unable to have children (19:2–9). Allah told him, “O Yahya, take hold of the Scripture with strength”, and gave him wisdom while still a child (19:12). He is described as tender-hearted, pure, devoted to Allah and kind to his parents, “and he was not a tyrant or disobedient” (19:13–14). The Qur’an sends a special greeting on him: “Peace be upon him the day he was born, the day he dies, and the day he is raised alive” (19:15).

Yahya confirmed the coming of Isa (3:39). In the hadith of the Night Journey, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) met Yahya and Isa together in the second heaven and called them “the two cousins” (Sahih al-Bukhari 3887).

Yahya’s story isn’t one of the five in the Hudhud book, but Isa’s is, and the two are closely linked. Read our Prophet Isa story for kids and the overview of all the Prophets’ stories.
