Adam name meaning in Islam, origin and popularity in the UK

Adam is a Hebrew and Arabic name usually explained as “of the earth” or “made from earth”, from the Hebrew adamah, “ground”. Arabic scholars also link it to a warm brown colour. In Islam, Adam (peace be upon him) is the first human and the first Prophet. In 2025 Adam was 26th among boys’ names in England and Wales.

What does Adam mean?

In Hebrew, adam means “man” or “humankind” and is linked to adamah, “ground” or “earth”, because the first man was formed from earth. Arabic dictionaries give two related explanations: from adīm al-arḍ, the surface of the earth, or from udma, a tawny or brown colour. A hadith explains the link beautifully: Allah created Adam from a handful of soil taken from all over the earth, so his children came in all the colours of the earth (Sunan Abi Dawud 4693, graded sahih by al-Albani).

How do you pronounce Adam?

In Arabic, say AA-dam, with a long first “a”, as in “father”. In English it is AD-um. Both are correct, and many British Muslim families use whichever suits the setting.

The Prophet Adam (peace be upon him)

The Qur’an tells how Allah announced to the angels that He would place a khalifah, a successor, on earth (2:30), then taught Adam the names of all things (2:31). The angels bowed down to Adam, except Iblis, who refused out of pride (2:34). Adam and his wife lived in the Garden until they ate from the one tree they had been told to avoid; they turned to Allah at once and prayed, “Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves, and if You do not forgive us and have mercy on us, we will surely be among the losers” (7:23). Allah accepted their repentance (2:37).

For children, Adam’s story teaches that everyone makes mistakes and that Allah loves those who say sorry. It is a lovely first story; see our guide on how to teach kids about the Prophets.

Adam and the Hudhud book

Adam’s story isn’t one of the five in the Hudhud book, which follows Nuh, Ibrahim, Musa, Isa and Muhammad (peace be upon them). A child called Adam is still the hero of his own book, though: his name replaces “Yusuf”, the sample hero, all the way through.
