Ali name meaning in Islam, origin and popularity in the UK

Ali is an Arabic name meaning “high”, “exalted” or “noble”, from the root ʿ-l-w. It is the name of Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him), the cousin and son-in-law of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and the fourth caliph. In 2025 Ali was 103rd among boys in England and Wales.

What does Ali mean?

Ali comes from the Arabic root ʿ-l-w, which carries the idea of height and nobility. The same root gives al-ʿAlī, “the Most High”, one of the names of Allah (2:255), which is why some families prefer the plain form “Ali” or combinations such as Abdul-Ali, “servant of the Most High”. As a personal name, Ali has been loved since the earliest days of Islam.

How do you pronounce Ali?

In Arabic, say a-LEE, beginning with the throat sound ʿayn and stressing the long “ee”. In the UK and South Asia it is often said AH-lee. Either is fine.

Ali is also a nickname for Alistair, Alice and Alexander in English, but as a Muslim name it stands entirely on its own.

Ali ibn Abi Talib

Ali was born in Makkah around the year 600 and grew up in the Prophet’s household. He was among the very first to accept Islam, as a boy. On the night of the Hijrah he slept in the Prophet’s bed so that the Prophet could leave Makkah safely. He married the Prophet’s daughter Fatima, and their sons were Hasan and Husayn.

Ali was known for his courage, his knowledge and his eloquence. The Prophet (peace be upon him) told him, “You are to me as Harun was to Musa, except that there is no Prophet after me” (Sahih Muslim 2404; see also Sahih al-Bukhari 3706). He became the fourth caliph in 656 and died in Kufa in 661. He is honoured by all Muslims; Shia Muslims also regard him as the first Imam.

Other well-known people called Ali include the boxer Muhammad Ali, who took the name when he became Muslim in 1964.

Ali and the Hudhud book

Hudhud’s stories are of five Prophets: Nuh, Ibrahim, Musa, Isa and Muhammad (peace be upon them). A boy called Ali becomes the traveller himself: his name and likeness replace the sample hero, Yusuf, throughout the book.
