Eid al-Adha gifts for kids: ideas rooted in the story of Ibrahim

Good Eid al-Adha gifts for kids connect to what the day remembers: Prophet Ibrahim’s trust in Allah, the Kaaba, Hajj and sharing the Qurbani with others. Try a Hajj or Prophet story book, a Kaaba puzzle, a “spend and give” jar or a personalised Islamic storybook, alongside new clothes and Eidi. Eid al-Adha 2027 is expected around 16 May.

What does Eid al-Adha mean for children?

Eid al-Adha, the “Festival of the Sacrifice”, remembers how Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) was ready to obey Allah, and how Allah looked after him and his son. It falls on 10 Dhul Hijjah, while pilgrims are performing Hajj.

In the Qur’an, Ibrahim tells his son of a dream in which he is sacrificing him, and the son answers, “Do as you are commanded; you will find me, if Allah wills, among the patient” (Qur’an 37:102). Allah ransomed the son “with a great sacrifice” (37:107). The Qur’an also tells us that the meat and blood of the sacrifice do not reach Allah, “but what reaches Him is piety from you” (22:37), and tells believers to eat from it and feed others (22:36).

For young children, keep it simple: Ibrahim loved and trusted Allah, Allah took care of him, and on Eid we pray, celebrate and share. That makes sharing the natural theme for gifts. For a gentle retelling, see the story of Prophet Ibrahim for kids.

Many South Asian families call it Bakra Eid, and it is often called the “greater Eid”. If you want broader ideas that suit either Eid, our guide to Eid gifts for kids sorts them by type and budget.

How can you turn the ten days of Dhul Hijjah into a gift countdown?

Spread small gifts and activities across the first ten days of Dhul Hijjah, ending with the main present on Eid. These are among the best days of the year for good deeds: the Prophet (peace be upon him) said no good deeds on other days are better than those done in these ten days (Sahih al-Bukhari 969).

  1. Day 1: Put up a picture of the Kaaba and give the Hajj book or story collection.
  2. Days 2–3: Read about Ibrahim and Ismail building the Kaaba (2:127) and start the Kaaba puzzle.
  3. Days 4–5: Practise the takbir together, with a small prize for learning it.
  4. Days 6–7: Start a kindness chart, with a sticker for each good deed.
  5. Day 8: Bake for neighbours with the baking kit.
  6. Day 9 (‘Arafah): Tell them what the pilgrims are doing at ‘Arafah today. Many adults fast; children can make dua with you before sunset.
  7. Day 10 (Eid): Eid prayer, new clothes, the main present and Eidi, with part of it going into the “give” jar.

For more ways to turn these stories into conversations, see teaching kids about the Prophets.

How do you explain Qurbani to a child alongside the gifts?

Explain it as sharing: families sacrifice an animal for Allah and give its meat to relatives, neighbours and people in need. Many scholars recommend dividing it into thirds (for the family, for friends and relatives, and for the poor), though this division is recommended rather than required.

In the UK most families arrange Qurbani through a butcher or a charity rather than at home, so children rarely see it. Keep the explanation calm and age-appropriate, focus on Ibrahim’s trust and on feeding others, and let older children help choose where a charity share goes.

When should you order Eid al-Adha gifts for 2027?

Frequently asked questions

What gifts are given on Eid al-Adha?

Children usually receive new clothes, Eidi (gift money), sweets and a present. Gifts linked to the meaning of the day, such as books about Prophet Ibrahim or Hajj, a Kaaba puzzle and a “spend and give” jar, are popular choices.

Do you give presents on Eid al-Adha as well as Eid al-Fitr?

Many UK families do, though customs vary: some give bigger presents on Eid al-Fitr and Eidi on Eid al-Adha. Gift-giving on either Eid is a cultural custom rather than a religious requirement.

How do I explain Eid al-Adha to a young child?

Keep it short: Prophet Ibrahim loved Allah and was ready to obey Him, and Allah looked after him and his son. On Eid we pray, celebrate and share food with family, neighbours and people in need.

When is Eid al-Adha 2027 in the UK?

It is expected around 16 May 2027, with the ten days of Dhul Hijjah starting around 7 May. The exact date depends on the sighting of the moon, so check with your local mosque.

What is a meaningful Eid al-Adha gift for a 5-year-old?

A story book about Prophet Ibrahim, a Kaaba puzzle, or a personalised Islamic storybook where they travel through the Prophets’ stories themselves. Pair it with a small “give” jar so they can share part of their Eidi.

Why is Eid al-Adha called Bakra Eid?

In Urdu and Hindi, “bakra” means goat, a common Qurbani animal in South Asia, so many South Asian families call it Bakra Eid. It is the same festival as Eid al-Adha or Eid ul-Adha.
